  • The future of the Mediterranean amidst new global geostrategic realities

As part of IRES debate cycle dedicated to the mutations occurring at the regional and international context, opened to Ambassadors and senior officials, Mr. Fathallah SIJILMASSI, Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean ( UfM ) facilitated, Tuesday, April 22, 2014, a conference on the theme “The future of the Mediterranean amidst new global geostrategic realities”.

This conference was attended by representatives of diplomatic missions of some Mediterranean countries, Moroccan diplomats and representatives of the private sector as well as university experts. It highlighted the specifics of UfM as a framework for dialogue and cooperation bringing together 43 countries and it role in strengthening regional cooperation through concrete projects in key structural domains. Other relevant aspects were emphasized including the centrality of human development in the cooperative approach promoted by the UfM, the importance of South-South integration in the Mediterranean, in a world where there will be no future for isolated countries and the need for greater coordination between the various regional institutions working on Mediterranean issues
