The Royal Institute for Strategic Studies (IRES) organized, February 14, 2013, a meeting on the theme "Designing sustainable urban ecosystems : a scientific challenges of strategic significance", in collaboration with a French research consortium, supported by the Coordination Service of business intelligence (CISE) of the Ministry of Economy (France), and the Helios Foundation for Dialogue and Development.

During this meeting, attended by public actors, scientific and professional of sustainable city and Moroccan and French experts of complex systems engineering, the focus has been made on examining the state of the art and good practice in the field of designing sustainable urban ecosystems and the main challenges faced in this area, particularly with regard to the integration of sub-systems: water, energy, urban transport, urban transport, housing, health ... as well as the complex issue of determining human behavioral criteria that inhabit these ecosystems.

Other important aspects were highlighted, including the opportunity to promote scientific research on urban issues in their various dimensions to promote better lighting choices public policies and, ultimately, strengthen the proactive capacity of public policies. Discussions were also focused on the importance of strengthening the skills of various stakeholders in the design of urban ecosystems, institutions, private actors, civil society and citizens in order to achieve the ambitions of the new urban policy of Morocco.
